About GCS&MAI

It was like any other evening when on Jan 28, 2003 12 Golf Superintends & Managers met at Air Force Golf Club New Delhi for an informal meeting called by Late Col K D Bagga. Col K D Bagga, in those days was designing few golf courses and was promoting what he called as 'Affordable Golf'. He passionately wanted the game to grow in all corners of the country and was particularly proud of having contributed to introducing the game of golf in Ahmedabad.

One thing led to another during discussions and it dawned on everyone that Course Maintenance / Green keeping was markedly absent from any forums and bodies like IGU did not have a Greens section. So on that day at Air Force Golf Club, New Delhi, the idea of forming an Association for Golf Superintendents was born. Keeping in view that in many golf courses the Manager also doubled up as a Superintendent, the Association was named as Golf Course Superintendents & Managers Association of India which was also a recognition that tasks in a Golf Club are interlinked. Col K D Bagga was elected as the President and Wg Cdr A K Singh as first Secretary General.

Col K D Bagga, remained the driving force behind the Association and during his visits to Australia , forged a relationship with Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association (AGCSA) from Australia came for all the GCS&MAI seminars in the initial years and really helped us to evolve. Unfortunately, Col Bagga's deteriorating health took a toll on the relationship with AGCSA as he had kept the relationship at personal level. The Association found its footing through the efforts of Col K D Bagga and was ably assisted by Col Pravin Uberoi, VSM who was the Secretary General for most parts of those initial years.

The association got established and started having regular elections. Col S K Bhattacharya and Wg Cdr A K Singh became the President and Secretary General respectively. GCS&MAI got into an agreement with AGIF through Mr. Anil Dev and became part of India Golf Show. The seminars became bigger and we were fortunate to have the support of industry with Toro, Rainbird, Hunter and Jacobsen and sponsors providing regular support.

In the year 2016, the association under the leadership of Mr 'Cheese' Mani decided to expand its horizons and conducted seminars at Kodaikanal and Vishakhapatnam. A relationship was also forged with the Indian Golf Industry Association and GCS&MAI with both conducting the Golf Industry Show together. The relationship has provided a joint forum for different stakeholders to promote the facets of Golf Industry.

The Golf Course Superintendents & Managers Association of India is an association for the men and women who manage and maintain the game’s most valuable resource — the golf course. The golf industry recognizes the association as a key contributor in elevating the game and business.
